I am honored to be with you tonight, celebrating life, the American Cancer Society and its unparalleled work. Because of ACS, a cancer diagnosis of today IS NOT the death sentence of yesterday.
I am the reality. Because of Cancer, I am stronger, empowered, enriched. My faith is strengthened. I’ve also learned the value of sharing my journey, providing hope and support. To encourage, embolden and embrace those of us who are forever linked by three words: “You Have Cancer.” Realistically, I know my doctor’s tone was soothing, her voice managed and caring with the delivery of my diagnosis, “Carole, You Have Cancer.”
However, hearing the word CANCER linked with CAROLE ignited my senses. CANCER screamed through my head; my vision went dark then exploded with flashing light; the world spun around me, I was paralyzed with fear. And the screaming, it went on and on. Suddenly, all things stopped, rebalanced and focused. It was quiet. I could breathe. I began to FIGHT.
My greatest battle ever. This enemy named Cancer, became my memorable teacher of every life lesson, and was more easily fought because I was embraced. I did not stand alone. The American Cancer Society was a shelter in this storm. Its amazing expertise, programs, outreach, research, support and years of groundbreaking work paved the way.
For more than a 100 years, The American Cancer Society has been leading the fight to end cancer. With your support, we have helped usher in an era where more people survive cancer than ever before. By translating our research findings into action, we've seen a 20% decline in US cancer death rates since the early 1990s. Join us to help finish the fight.
